How Do you do a Football Patent Bet?

There have been a few tipsters of late specialising in something called a “Patent” bet, but what exactly is this? Maybe you thought it was something they just discussed on Dragon’s Den as they grill inventors on the originality and uniqueness of their idea, but no in gambling Patent means something different.

What is a Patent Bet?

A Patent bet is a 7 bet wager consisting of 3 selections in the following formation…

Part Selections (1-3) Number of Bets
Single 1, 2, 3 3
Double 12, 23, 13 3
Treble 123 1
Total: 7

As you can see with this bet you have all possible multiples covered with 3 selections. With 3 singles placed, 3 doubles and 1 treble placed.

To see how it works for football bets let’s test this with an example of some Football Value Tips we gave out recently to see if betting in multiples can pay off.

Example 1:

England Premier League Hull City Liverpool Double Chance – Win/Draw Hull City 3 BetVictor 2.5 Won 2|0 5
England Premier League Watford Burnley Watford to win 2.15 BetVictor 5 Won 2|1 5.75
England Championship Newcastle Derby Newcastle to win 1.83 BetVictor 5 Won 1|0 4.15

Ok so here are 3 winning bets of ours, we place them as singles with varying stakes based on odds, but how would it have worked as a patent for our clients?

Ok so as these 3 selections won the payout is going to be a max patent payout as follows assuming a £12.53 patent (Roughly same total stake as above)

Stake: £12.53
Return: £62.03
Profit: £49.51

As you can see our £12.53 patent produces a huge profit of £49.51 which is much higher than our single bets profit of £14.9. However what happens if we lose one of the bets? Lets see below.

Example 2:

England Premier League Hull City Liverpool Double Chance – Win/Draw Hull City 3 BetVictor 2.5 lost 2|0 -2.5
England Premier League Watford Burnley Watford to win 2.15 BetVictor 5 Won 2|1 5.75
England Championship Newcastle Derby Newcastle to win 1.83 BetVictor 5 Won 1|0 4.15

Stake: £12.53
Return: £14.17
Profit: £1.64

As you can see if we lose one leg of our accumulator the profits diminish dramatically. We only make £1.64 this time, compared with our singles bets which would still clear
£7.40 profit with one loser on our own staking plan.

Conclusion

For me Patent’s are only worth it if you hit the max payout. In this case I would rather just place my singles then have a smaller stake on a treble, than use a complex bet that will only
really give me a worthwhile payout on hitting all 3.

That said at different odds you may find the 2/3 payout more substantial and those with the patience can obviously be rewarded heavily when hitting the 3/3 with the insurance of profit on a 2/3 when things don’t quite work out.
